Staying at home does not have to be boring. There are many fun activities that you and your children can do without spending a lot of money. Basically any object you don’t use anymore can be a springboard to entertain yourself and your family.
Below you will find some fun, inexpensive activities you can do at home to spend quality time with your children.
Decorate a T-Shirt
It doesn’t take a lot to have fun. Just find an old T-shirt and let your imagination run wild. Things can be as simple as drawing on the T-Shirt with a pen or marker. Or you can explore more elaborate options, like using glue, pieces of fabric, acrylic paint or glitter. Each member of the family can create their own T-Shirt and then you can organize a contest to determine who made the best design. The winner can get a prize or a privilege, like deciding which movie you’ll watch later.
Make Pizza or Bread
Making bread is easy, and the process has endless potential to entertain and educate children. Since bread is almost as old as our civilization, making bread can turn into a history lesson. Or you can use it to illustrate some principles of physics and chemistry. Or you just can have fun with your children, allowing them to help you measure, mix and knead. You can also decide to make a cake, and in that case you can have even more fun decorating it.
A tangram is a Chinese geometric puzzle that consists of a square cut into seven pieces that can be arranged to make various other shapes. The principle is simple, but the possibilities are endless, and endless possibilities are often the starting point of great fun. If you don’t have a tangram at home, don’t worry: There are patterns you can download and print from the Internet. If you don’t have a printer, making a tangram yourself is not difficult as long as you have a piece of cardboard, a ruler, a marker, and a reference. This is how they look like, in case you want to make your own.
We all have old socks we don’t wear anymore. Put them to good use and turn them into puppets. Encourage your children to create characters and write plays or sketches they can perform for the family. When it comes to appearance, things can be as simple as just putting the sock in your hand and making it “talk,” or you can use some of the techniques suggested for decorating a T-Shirt (point 1 on this list) to create more elaborate characters.
