Anyone who does much gardening knows that one of the biggest problems to be faced is what to do about pests. Pests can cause a lot of damage to your garden and no one wants to see that after all the hard work that’s been put into it. But before you go out and buy a pesticide from your local garden center, consider doing something that is less harmful to the environment. Try getting rid of those pests using some natural solutions.
It is interesting to note that pests are less attracted to healthy strong plants. One of the most important ways to keep garden pests away is to grow healthy and disease-free plants. Pests will more likely attack a neglected plant than one which has been well grown in nutrient rich soil.
Aromatic herbs can keep insects away. The smell of herbs such as mint, basil, lemongrass and fennel are sweet to humans, but insect are repelled by it. Try mixing these natural aromatic herbs into your plants surroundings.
Snails and slugs can devastate a garden, but you can keep them away by using a simple trick. Crush some eggshells and spread them onto the soil around your plants to be protected. Snails and slugs can’t cross soil which has eggshells in it because the sharp edges of the eggshells would cut their body’s. As an added bonus, once the eggshells disintegrate over time, they release calcium into the soil which further benefits your plants.
There is also another way to keep snails and slugs out and that is with copper. A strip of copper surrounding your garden is a great way to keep away slugs and snails. The slime that the slugs and snails produce causes a painful chemical reaction when they come into contact with the copper.
These are just a few of the ways you can protect your garden from pests while also protecting the environment.
