3D Printing the Future, One Layer at a Time

In the Discovering Automation program at Akoma Unity Center, students are not just learning about technology, they are creating with it. Through an exciting partnership with Accessible Automation, local youth in San Bernardino are gaining hands-on experience with 3D printing and design. They are learning how to take ideas from their minds, render them on screen, and produce physical, functional parts they can use in real-world projects. This transformative learning opportunity is opening doors and building skills that will serve these students for years to come.

For many participants, this is the first time they have worked with 3D printers or design tools. The experience is both eye-opening and empowering. Students discover that they can create something tangible from their imagination. It is a powerful moment of realization that inspires creativity, confidence, and a deeper interest in technology.

Help support this journey by contributing your time, resources, or outreach to help expand access to these vital learning experiences.

Learning 3D Printing Skills That Matter

The Discovering Automation program introduces students to the fundamentals of 3D printing. This includes using professional-grade design software, understanding how different materials like PLA and resin function, and learning to print customized components. Students explore the complete process, from design conception to final production, and gain a clear sense of how these tools are used in today’s industries.

Our students are fast learners, especially when it comes to 3D printing. One learner told us, “I didn’t know I could make something on a computer and then print it!” See how quickly students grasp both the fun and the purpose of what they’re learning. As they create and print their own parts, students also begin to see how 3D printing skills can lead to real career paths in design, manufacturing, and engineering.

Closing the Digital Divide with Creativity

This hands-on training plays a vital role in closing the digital divide. Students from underrepresented communities are often left out of the technology conversation. This isn’t because of a lack of interest, but because of a lack of access. The Discovering Automation program changes that by providing direct experience with the same tools used in today’s tech-forward workplaces.

By engaging with 3D printers, design software, and high-quality materials, Akoma students are gaining more than knowledge. They are gaining a sense of belonging in a field that is shaping the future. This opportunity is made possible through the support of partners like San Manuel, SBUSD, Edison, SoCal Gas, EXLSBUSD, and others who believe in investing in the potential of San Bernardino youth.

From Digital Design to Real-World Results

With every part they design and print, students are learning more than just technical skills. They are learning to think like creators, engineers, and innovators. These experiences help build a foundation of problem-solving, digital literacy, and creative confidence. For students at Akoma Unity Center, 3D printing is not just a project – it is a path toward new possibilities.

Support the growth of our students by volunteering, donating, and sharing the program with any young learners in your life.
