A Place to Grow and Discover
When kids step into Akoma Unity Center, they walk into a space filled with possibility. Some come looking for a place to belong, while others are searching for something new to inspire them. Many don’t yet know what excites them, but through mentorship at Akoma, they have the freedom to explore, create, and uncover their passions with guidance from the people around them.

One such kid arrived at Akoma feeling uncertain. They had spent a lot of time at home, moving through their days without direction. But at Akoma, surrounded by supportive mentors and peers, they discovered something unexpected – a love for photography.
An Akoma volunteer noticed the kid’s interest and encouraged them to pick up a camera. With a little guidance, they started capturing the world through a new lens. Soon, they weren’t just taking photos; they were learning editing techniques, exploring different styles, and finding excitement in something they never thought they would.
“I used to feel like I didn’t have any talent, like I was bad at everything. But now, I’m getting ready for my first photo shoot! Akoma gave me a place where I can be myself, and now I know I have something special.” – (name withheld for privacy)
How Akoma Mentorship Inspires Change
Mentorship at Akoma isn’t about using a rigid and set program; it’s woven into our culture. Mentorship happens when a staff member encourages a child to try something new. It happens when an older teen shares advice with a younger one. Mentorship doesn’t happen on a set schedule – it happens in the everyday moments that help kids feel seen, supported, and inspired.
Encouraging Self-Discovery
Many kids arrive at Akoma unsure of their interests. Here, they have the space and support to explore different activities, whether it’s through the arts, technology, or leadership opportunities.
Building Confidence Through Passion
A simple introduction to photography, art, coding, or music can ignite a passion that shapes their future. With encouragement from mentors and peers, kids begin to believe in themselves, set goals, and take ownership of their growth.

Creating a Community of Support
At Akoma, mentorship happens through shared experiences, friendships, and guidance from caring adults. Whether through casual conversations or hands-on learning, kids build connections that help them grow.
