Confidence Through Coding
At Akoma Unity Center in San Bernardino, a group of young learners is discovering the joy of seeing technology respond to their ideas. In partnership with Accessible Automation, the Discovering Automation youth program recently entered one of its most exciting phases: coding robots. For many participants, this marks the first time they have written code. The experience is not only sparking interest in technology, but also building deep confidence in what they can accomplish.
By writing code that moves robotic arms, controls input and output systems, and responds to real-time commands, these students are seeing immediate results from their efforts. They are learning that programming is not only accessible, but powerful – and fun.
You can help expand this opportunity by volunteering, donating, or sharing the program with learners you know.
Discover the Power of Programming
In the Discovering Automation program, students learn the fundamentals of robot programming, including how to write motion control commands and manage the robot’s input/output (I/O) functions. For many, this step transforms robotics from something mysterious into something they can shape with their own logic and creativity. It is a moment of discovery that changes how they see both the machines and themselves.

One of our students shared, “I didn’t think I would like programming, but it’s so fun to make the robot move!” Statements like this reflect a powerful shift, from passive users of technology to active builders. Coding robots becomes more than a classroom exercise – it becomes a personal victory.
Building Skills for the Future
While learning to code robots may seem like a niche skill, it lays the foundation for a wide range of competencies. Students are improving their math fluency as they calculate angles and timing. They are sharpening their problem-solving skills as they debug code and refine logical steps. And they are building vital technological literacy that will serve them well in school, in future careers, and in everyday life.
Through hands-on practice and real-time feedback, students are learning to think like engineers and innovators. They are experiencing what it means to solve problems not just with answers, but with algorithms and action.
A Community Committed to Growth
This type of learning does not happen in isolation. It is made possible by Akoma’s commitment to youth development, and by the support of partners like Accessible Automation. The program’s inclusive approach ensures that students of all backgrounds can access the tools and mentorship they need to thrive in a tech-driven world. Every robot coded is not just a sign of learning – it is a step toward a more empowered future for San Bernardino’s youth. As students explore the world of automation, they are finding not only new knowledge, but also new belief in their potential.
From Curiosity to Capability at Akoma Unity Center
When a student writes their first lines of code and watches a robot respond, something changes. It is a spark of understanding, a glimpse of possibility, and often the start of a lifelong interest in technology. At Akoma Unity Center, these moments are happening every day, and they are building the next generation of thinkers and makers.
