Why Volunteer In The Garden

The Akoma garden is not just a green space – it is a living classroom. Food scraps are transformed into compost, teaching the value of renewal. Fresh harvests show what can happen when communities come together to cultivate healthy choices. By volunteering, you are not only helping to maintain the garden but also learning skills that support sustainable living and healthier lifestyles.
Garden Work Days are held every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Akoma Unity Center, 1367 N. California Street in San Bernardino. Volunteers can expect to dig, plant, water, compost, and harvest while working alongside Master Gardeners and community members. There are also opportunities to join workshops where you can learn techniques that you can take back to your own backyard.
