Opening Doors Through Real-World Robotics

In classrooms filled with curiosity and the sound of motors humming to life, students at Akoma Unity Center are stepping into the world of real-world robotics. Thanks to the Discovering Automation program – created in partnership with Accessible Automation – these young innovators are gaining hands-on exposure to the machines, systems, and careers shaping the future of technology. This is more than just a lesson in science or engineering. It is an invitation for San Bernardino youth to imagine themselves as creators and problem-solvers in industries once considered far out of reach.

From healthcare to aerospace, students are learning how robotics are used in the real world. They are discovering how technology helps people in hospitals. They’re learning how machines improve safety and efficiency in manufacturing. Most importantly, they’re learning that robotics is revolutionizing nearly every career path imaginable. The curriculum does not stop at the technical level. It also explores the societal impact of automation, including its role in boosting productivity and transforming workforce dynamics.

Get involved by donating, volunteering, or spreading the word to support these brilliant young minds as they build the future.

What Students Are Learning in the Discovering Automation Program

The Discovering Automation program introduces students to core concepts in industrial robotics. Students explore how automation is used to increase efficiency and productivity while addressing the challenges of workforce adaptation and reskilling. They also study different robot types, such as articulated arms, SCARA, and delta robots, and their use in sectors ranging from advanced manufacturing to public health.

One of our learners recently said, “I didn’t think about how machines help people in hospitals,” while another shared, “It is cool to learn what jobs might be out there one day.” These kinds of quotes show how just a few sessions with real-world robotics can open up entire career paths and boost a young person’s confidence in what they are capable of achieving.

Connecting Learning with Purpose

Beyond teaching technical skills, this program empowers students to think critically about the world they will inherit. They learn about automation’s impact on society. Most important, they learn the skills needed to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving economy. By bridging theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice, students begin to see themselves not only as future workers, but as architects of change. The experience is both educational and aspirational.

Mentorship from instructors, exposure to industry innovations, and strategic skill-building are key parts of the program’s design. This ensures that students are not just learning how to operate machines – they are learning how to lead.

A Community-Wide Effort

It takes a village to raise a generation of leaders, and the Discovering Automation program reflects this truth. Akoma’s commitment to youth empowerment is supported by a growing network of community organizations, educational partners, and volunteers who believe in the untapped potential of every student. The program actively recruits from underrepresented backgrounds, ensuring that access to real-world robotics is equitable, inclusive, and transformative.

By investing in this program, San Bernardino is investing in its future: one where young people are not just prepared for jobs, but ready to lead innovation in their own communities.

The Future Starts at Akoma

The students at Akoma Unity Center are not waiting for the future, they are building it. Through the Discovering Automation program, they are gaining knowledge, confidence, and the hands-on experience they need to succeed in an automated world. This is what empowerment looks like in action.

If you know a learner who could benefit from the Discovering Automation program, sign them up! Akoma Unity Center is happy to help all learners, old and new.
