In recent years, feeling burnout has become more and more common among professionals from many different fields and with different careers and occupations. However, burnout is also becoming an issue for students of any grade, as they work themselves to the point of becoming extremely exhausted. Overworking for long periods of time and feeling a lack of control over the situation, while also showing little to no passion about the subject or assignment is what experts describe as student burnout. Therefore, parents should stay alert and learn to identify the following signs of student burnout our children might be showing.
One of the most obvious signs of student burnout in our kids is when grades start getting worse at the middle of the school year. The vast majority of kids usually have a strong beginning, when they are engaged with their academic activities, showing enjoyment and interest. However, burnt out students tend to show grades dropping as the year progresses, and if that’s the case with our kids, we shouldn’t ignore it.
Another sign of student burnout that might go unnoticed by parents is a reduced interaction of our kid with friends and family. Many specialists have found that burnout can lead to increased levels of stress, anxiety, and even depression, which is one of the reasons we shouldn’t be taking this lightly. If our kid is suffering from student burnout, they might be isolating themselves from doing activities they enjoy and from spending time with their loved ones.
It is quite common to see kinds who will stay up until very late at night, whether because they are chatting with friends, playing videogames, or studying for an upcoming quiz. However, if this is a common behavior, it may lead to a sleep deprivation problem that we as parents should address as soon as possible. Whether our kids are falling asleep at school, either during their classes or lunch break, or at home during dinner or very early in the evening, it may be an indication of student burnout.
Losing motivation and the willing to engage in any kind of academic or extra-curricular activity is a very clear sign of student burnout that our kids may show. Whenever we feel burnout, we have little to no energy left, and this happens to our children, too. So, if we notice that our kids are not showing interest or excitement about activities they used to enjoy, we should take action and address the problem. If we don’t, the issue might keep growing, and our kids might keep feeling worse as time goes by.
If you think your kid is suffering from student burnout, talk to them and work on setting more realistic and healthier schedules. Most importantly, remember to offer them the support they need, remind them that failure is a healthy part of the road to success, and be a role model in regards of self-care and commitment.
