How Akoma Builds Confidence Through Code
At Akoma Unity Center in San Bernardino, robotics is about far more than circuits and sensors. It is about confidence: the kind that young people can carry into classrooms, job interviews, and life itself. While students are learning how to code and automate real-world tasks, they are also discovering their own voice, strength, and potential. Each line of code they write becomes a stepping stone toward something greater: self-belief.
For underserved youth who may not always hear that they are capable, brilliant, or destined to lead, Akoma’s Robotics and Automation program delivers that message loud and clear. The program is structured to develop technical skills, but its true power lies in its ability to transform self-perception. When students believe they can solve a problem, finish a project, or lead a team, that confidence becomes the most valuable output of all.

Building Belief One Lesson at a Time
The Discovering Automation Youth Program, powered by Accessible Automation and hosted at Akoma Unity Center, gives students hands-on experience in robotics, programming, and 3D design. But for students like Susana, Devin, and Tiana, the lessons extend beyond the classroom. Susana beamed with pride after scoring 15 out of 15 on a robotics quiz. Devin, after working on his assignments at home, earned public recognition from his instructor. For Tiana, coding is not only fun, it is a way to trust her own decision-making and see the results come to life.
These may seem like small moments, but for many participants, they represent the first time they are publicly celebrated for technical skill, persistence, and curiosity. When a student solves a coding challenge or completes a group project, they are not only learning STEM – they are proving to themselves that they are capable of succeeding in any environment.
Turning Real-World Skills into Personal Empowerment
Akoma’s robotics curriculum is intentionally designed to develop both technical knowledge and leadership ability. Through modules like robot programming, 3D printing, and project implementation, students build real-world skills that align with industry demands. But as they work together on complex tasks, present their ideas, and take ownership of their progress, they also become confident communicators and strategic thinkers.
This approach to youth development bridges the digital divide while fostering emotional growth. Students learn to work in teams, advocate for their ideas, and persist through challenges, traits that extend well beyond the lab. By connecting classroom lessons with real-life application, Akoma Unity Center ensures that confidence is not just taught, but lived.

Why It Matters Now More Than Ever
In today’s rapidly evolving world, technical knowledge is critical, but belief in one’s ability to succeed is transformational. Akoma Unity Center recognizes that underserved youth deserve both. By offering a space where students can learn, experiment, and grow, the Center equips them with tools to face an automated future with optimism and strength. Students who gain confidence through code create the foundation on which careers, dreams, and futures are built.
