Teen Mental Health at Akoma Unity Center
At Akoma Unity Center, we believe that healing begins with being heard. In a world where young people are increasingly silenced or overlooked, our commitment to teen mental health is about more than awareness. It is about action. One of the most powerful moments in our recent journey came during our Mental Health Kickback, when a teen stood up and said, “I want to be a therapist when I grow up. Not just the kind who prescribes something, but someone who helps people understand what’s going on inside.” That sentiment resonated deeply with everyone in the room. It was a reminder that youth are not just seeking support, they are ready to lead.

Through the ADAPP (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Program), Akoma is actively shifting how mental health is discussed and experienced in the San Bernardino community. By offering Teen Mental Health First Aid Certification, our program equips youth with the skills and confidence to identify signs of mental distress, support their peers, and connect to professional help when needed. These conversations are not confined to classrooms or clinical settings. They are happening in creative spaces that reflect our culture and values.

More Than a Program – It’s a Movement
The ADAPP initiative at Akoma Unity Center is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It is designed to meet teens where they are, both emotionally and culturally. From peer-led discussion circles to themed events like our “Inside Out” Kickback, we are using creative outreach to make mental wellness approachable and relevant. These events are not only engaging; they are educational and deeply impactful.
At the heart of this effort is the belief that emotional wellness should be part of everyday life. Youth deserve environments that reflect their cultural identities, honor their experiences, and encourage openness. That is what sets Akoma apart. We are creating safe, affirming spaces where teens can speak without fear of judgment and learn tools that will serve them for a lifetime.

Building Trust, One Conversation at a Time
The stigma surrounding mental health is slowly being replaced by strength, vulnerability, and knowledge. Akoma Unity Center is proud to be part of that change. Every certification earned, every conversation sparked, and every healing moment shared is a step forward for our community. As we continue to grow the ADAPP program and expand our reach, we invite others to stand with us in this vital work.
Help Akoma Unity Center amplify the voices of our youth: spread the word, volunteer, or donate to support teen mental health today. If you have a teen in need of support, consider signing them up for our next event.
